If the lack of natural daylight and prescribed routes through the store don’t turn you into a quivering emotional wreck, once you get your homogenous flat-packed MDF bookshelf home, you have the instruction booklet to contend with. Building your own furniture could be a blast; there’s potential for the process to be fun and challenging. But instead, thanks to IKEA, you find yourself counting 324 wooden pegs, starting again at least four times because you dared to deviate from the ‘process’, and growing a deep, acidic resentment for those smug little bubble-men in the illustrations. Jane Barrett and Camilla Arnold’s book left me feeling the same way. Written by two highly experienced recruiters and career consultants, I expected a sharp, informative, insider’s view on how to change career smoothly and meaningfully. Instead, I felt as though I was reading a Dummies’ Guide To Career-Change, written by a first-year HR student. Clumsy grammar and sentence constructions make for an uncomfortable reading experience at the best of times, but paired with a cold and detached tone, they become almost unbearable. Barrett and Arnold cover all the topics you’d expect a career-change book to cover. Figuring out what you enjoy, dealing with your fears, pinpointing your skills, even how to work effectively with recruitment agencies and do well in interviews. But there’s one key factor missing: the element of human connection, and the recognition of how it really feels to go through a major career change. If the authors have done it themselves, they’re not letting on. Instead, they’ve put together a bland, step-by-step guide to changing career, written as though discovering your life’s work is an algebra problem or a flat-pack wardrobe. There’s a huge Values Matrix in Part Two, which covers two pages and involves ticking off all your beliefs, ranking them, comparing them, and inserting them into a mathematical-style grid which will apparently spit out your most fundamental values at the end. For an exercise designed to elicit the concepts closest to your heart, it seemed spectacularly sterile. As I flicked further through the book, my heart sank more with every tick-box I saw â€" and there are a LOT of tick-boxes. However, this is a deeply personal process, and what makes my heart sink might make yours dance. If you like an orderly and logic-based approach to discovering your heart’s desires, Barrett and Arnold’s approach will be right up your alley. Essentially, this book is a guide to getting a job in a different field than the one you’re currently in, rather than a journey to discovering and creating a life that lights you up. If you’re looking for a resource to help you list your skills and interests, and give you a broad overview of the job-search process, ‘If Not Now, When?’ will give you what you’re looking for. But don’t expect to have much fun doing it. Our Top Takeaways: Make a Life Collage: Rather than thinking about what job you’d like to do, start thinking about what you’d like your life to look like. Barrett and Arnold suggest a great way to do this: by making a visual collage of words, colours, statements and images that speak to you in some way. Rip up magazines, newspapers, take photos, and use paints; have fun with this project! Don’t think about what direction your collage is headed in until you’re done; simply allow yourself to play with whatever you find attractive. You may be very surprised by the themes that show up. Use a Reverse Timeline to make your change feel real: Once you know what you want to do, the gap between where you are and where you want to be can seem enormous. To bridge that gap, try starting from the end and working backwards. In your calendar, set a date for achieving your ultimate goal. Then, working backwards in monthly increments, write down what you would have to have achieved each month in order to have reached your goal by the final date. This can really help to make any goal feel structured and achievable, and is a great tool for career change. Get your key players on board from the start: There’s nothing worse than launching yourself into an exciting career change, making great progress, and then being dragged into paralysis by the weight of other people’s negative opinions. Talk to the most important people in your life early on in the process, and either get them on board or be clear about how you’re going to manage their criticisms and fears. The sooner you know who’s on your side, the more effectively you can build up the support network you need to soar.

Traditional Trades - A Route to Freedom For many career-minded women, flexibility in the hours and weeks of employment and a large degree of freedom are important considerations. And for many women, one of the best ways towards achieving these goals is via self-employment. But the big problems with choosing this route are the lack of an absolutely secure income, the sporadic nature of contacts and the requirement for genuine self-discipline and motivation. Perhaps it’s for these reasons that more women seem to be opting for the more traditional trades trades we would normally associate with men. So to explain; we’re talking here about trades such as plumber, electrician, mechanic, plasterer, builder, painter and decorator, welder etc. Some of these trades, and perhaps most notably the first three on the list offer reasonably secure employment whatever the economy may throw at us (though it’s still wise to be providential in the good times of course). Whats more they’re proving increasingly popular with women. HiPages, for example, notes that in Australia the number of women in these trades has been growing. True; men still account for four out of every five tradespeople down-under. But 2015 alone saw an amazing 490% increase in women tradespeople signing up on the site. And these kind of stats seem likely to be reflected in other developed economies. In short, things are changing in these trades with more and more women getting professionally qualified. And whilst not all tradespeople are self-employed, many are as this choice can offer a traditional route to self-employment. And, perhaps more to the point, it’s one that is reasonably secure. OK, such careers aren’t for everyone.  But for those women who enjoying working hard and deciding exactly when and where they want to work, trades offer an interesting option. And once you are professionally qualified, it’s something you can fall back on which, in turn, gives tradespeople the freedom to do more interesting things in life like travelling or taking a year out etc., whilst being reasonably safe in the knowledge that they can start again when they want to. Obviously, all such advice comes with a big word of warning; trades are competitive and there are no guarantees etc. But such trades are always in demand and for people who work well, who are qualified to do so and who work for a fair price, there is usually sufficient work. Also, many people commissioning such work would simply prefer to employ a woman for myriad reasons. Women are generally better communicators than their male counterparts and are often preferred by other women who need help from tradespeople but don’t like to feel condescended to. It’s the big day. Time to attend your interview. But you can’t just rock up to this important meeting wearing jeans and a t-shirt. We might be beyond the days when a full suit and tie was necessary in all workplace situations, but you’re still expected to dress to impress when you attend a job interview. Your communication skills are most likely exemplary, but if you go to an interview dressed like a panhandler it’s unlikely you’ll bag the position. If you’re female, the minefield of fashion is even greater. Men can simply show up in a casual suit, but for women the choices of what to wear are incredibly broad â€" and the line between casualwear and workwear is increasingly blurred. I have been following you since 2013! Its just crazy that this is the first time we are working together. I think that the application opening for Discover Your Dream Business came at a perfect time for me. I had recently lost my job and was working a part-time contract while also trying to figure out what to do next with my business. So it seemed like the universe brought us together when I really needed it. What were you doing work-wise when we started working together and what are you doing now? I was working part-time for a digital marketing company helping with community and partnership efforts. Now Im working two part-time roles doing a variety of things including customer research, editorial management and some solutions consulting. As well as continuing to build my business, Tech Biz Gurl, where I work with women who like their 9-5 but also want to create an additional income stream doing something they love. What was your biggest takeaway from our work together? I LOVED working together. You and the community were so supportive and it was really helpful to have the structure and the framework to think about my dream business. My biggest takeaway that I also tell my clients now is to keep your Nancy Drew hat on which was something you told us early on. That as we go through this process of building our dream businesses, to really put our detective hats on and look at it as a learning experience and an opportunity to see what works, what doesnt and how we might change that in the future. Think of someone who is currently in the shoes you wore when we first started working together. What advice do you have for her? I would tell her to work with Michelle! What I loved most is that we covered the building blocks of starting a business but we talked a lot about the mindset of it all. And I think thats what often keeps people stuck. You gave them a name and called them vampire voices. Those thoughts and fears of feeling not good enough, or that you are an impostor, or that you have nothing new to say. And you worked with us through those which were very loud especially at the beginning of this process. Is there anything thats been a game-changer for you when it comes to your business that you can share? Wed love a good resource or a mindset/productivity tip! My mindset tip would be: Get comfortable being uncomfortable. There will be new skills, experiences and oftentimes a lot of “impostor syndrome” that comes with being an entrepreneur and a side hustler. You will find that it is a muscle you’ll have to continually exercise by moving forward and taking action. And one of my favorite tools right now is Notion. Its like this swiss army knife type organizational system. I can take notes, make task lists, plan content, and even use it as a CRM. It’s like planning on steroids and so far, it’s working really well. The other bonus is that it’s really customizable which seems to work well with the different tabs open in my brain. White Workers Have Disproportionate Share of Good Jobs White workers still claim a disproportionate share of decent paying jobs, and while black and Latino workers have made gains, the equity gap has actually worsened in the past 25 years. That’s the major finding in a new report out today from the Georgetown Center on Education and the Workforce, which has been examining where “good jobs” are in today’s economy and who has them. “The answer is somewhat complicated, but the bottom line is white people get them and they still get the best of them,” says Anthony Carnevale, director of Georgetown’s CEW and a co-author of the study. The center defines a “good job” as one that pays “family-sustaining wages.” Specifically, they use a minimum of $35,000 for workers between the ages of 25 and 44 and at least $45,000 for older workers. Overall, the median salary for those with such jobs is $65,000 per person, which is about $7,000 higher than median household income in 2016. The center has previously looked at whether there are good jobs for high school diploma holders and what good jobs have been created in the years after the recession. In this study, the researchers looked at jobs, education levels, and earnings for the three largest racial and ethnic groups. About 75% of the 800 occupations the Bureau of Labor Statistic tracks pay median wages above the $35,000 threshold the researchers use. The researchers found in 2016, white workers held 77% of all the good jobs in the country, despite only making up 69% of the workforce. Black workers and Latino workers, on the other had, were underrepresented in good jobs: Black workers held 10% of good jobs, and 13% of all jobs, while Latino workers held 13% of good jobs and 18% of jobs overall. While all three groups have more workers in good jobs, white workers are so far ahead and are still moving forward, so a persistent gap remains. In 1991, white workers had 6 percentage point advantage. In 2016, it’d grown to 8 percentage points, according to the report. Those who have been successful in the new economy tend to have at least some education after high school, while those with only a high school diploma have “faced a vicious game of musical chairs,” the authors write. Those workers with only a high school diploma are competing for 7.9 million fewer jobs in 2016 than existed in 1991. That’s why access to education, whether a four-year degree or a shorter program that will qualify them for “middle-skills” jobs is so important. Yet even as blacks and Latinos have earned degrees, workers still earn less than white workers. Previous research shows that 11% to 18% of the wage gap between white workers and their black and Latino peers is unexplained by education levels, industry, geography, or other measurable differences, meaning economists attribute it to discrimination. Those salary differences add up to massive sum, according to the report. The researchers estimate white workers as a group are paid $554 billion moreâ€"every single yearâ€"than they would be if good jobs and earnings were equitably distributed in the workplace. The result is that black and Latino workers earn lessâ€"$202 billion and $352 billion less, respectively. The researchers say advantages white workers have today are due to historical discrimination, as well as educational and economic shifts that date back decades. Access to GI Bill benefits after World War II was unequal, for example, because black veterans had limited access to colleges. In the south, black veterans could enroll in only about 100 colleges, more than 25% of which were two-year junior colleges, the authors found. Greater education gave whites more access to high-paying jobs, while lending policies restricted access to housing for black Americans. Higher incomes and homeownership helped white families build wealth. In the 1980s, when the economy began to shift from blue-collar jobs to skills-based jobs that required some level of postsecondary education, that generational wealth meant white families were poised to attend en masse, even as the cost of college rose. Because the causes of current workforce gaps started in previous generations, that suggests there are still decades of unequal distribution to come. White workers have “essentially ensured dominance in the labor market for at least 30 years to come,” Carnevale said. To help, the authors suggest increased funding for colleges that enroll and graduate larger numbers of black and Latino students, alongside training to help displaced workers gain new skills. They also call for promoting equity and diversity in the workforce through measures such as increased funding and enforcement powers for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to alleviate discrimination in hiring and pay.

The Perfect Objective Statement for That Entry-Level Job - This week a recent college graduate sent me her resume, along with this question: “How can I update my objective statement to fit this specific job?”   While I appreciated her recognizing the need to customize her resume for each specific application, the best way to update an objective statement is to delete it altogether. Even if you’re looking for entry-level work, the very fact that you’re applying for a particular job indicates that your objective is to acquire that job.   Using your cover letter to explain why you desire this specific job will generally help your case, but adding an objective statement saying that you want the job only wastes space on your resume.   Worse still, many hiring managers say one of their pet peeves is receiving resumes with objective statements that have nothing to do with the position for which they’re hiring!   For instance, someone submitting a resume for an educational nonprofit that says their objective is to be an optometrist. If you’ve been in the workforce for a while, your experience will generally make logical sense in connection to the jobs for which you apply.   If you’re changing careers or looking for entry-level work, the content of your resume may be less directly relevant.   Resist the temptation to tell the employer what you want.   Instead, use that valuable space to summarize what you bring to the table as a candidate.   Not only is this a much more effective strategy for getting your resume into the coveted interview stack, but it makes the application process much easier for you as a job seeker.   Objective statements get people into trouble whenever they don’t match a job description exactlyâ€"which requires the job seeker to tweak his or her objective each time they submit a resume.   On the other hand, a summary statement capturing your essence as a candidate is something you can carry from resume to resumeâ€"as well as onto other media such as your LinkedIn profile or professional blog. As you may have guessed, my response to the recent college grad was to lose her objective statement and simply sell her relevant skills.   This strategy is effective no matter how long you’ve been in the workforce!
